Adoption Program
Parent Groups Adoption FAQs Resources Success Stories

ADOPTION FAQsWhat is involved in the process to become an adoptive parent? The process begins with turning in an application and then having an orientation with the Program Director. After the orientation, should you decide to go further, we will interview you so we can get to know you better and write your adoption home study. The adoption process includes 18-22 hours of training, paperwork (such as fingerprinting, physical examinations and TB testing, questionnaires), First Aid and CPR classes, and an in-depth assessment of your family. How does the adoption program work? TLC provides adoption services for those families wishing to build their family through the adoption of foster children. All such families must be certified as foster or fost-adopt families; all our children are initially placed as foster children. When you have an approved adoption home study, your adoption social worker will begin the child search process. You can attend bi-monthly meetings at TLC to review the profiles of children referred for adoption, and to identify children in whom you are interested. How long does the process take? The length of time depends greatly on you and how quickly you schedule the necessary appointments and complete your paperwork. From application to completed home study takes four to nine months for the average prospective adoptive parent(s). How will I be matched with a child or children?
Throughout the process, you will be asked about your preferences regarding the gender, ages and ethnicity of the children you want to consider for adoption. We will also assess your ability to work with the challenges presented by children who come from the foster care system. When your home study is complete, your social worker will identify profiles of children who match your preferences and whose needs match your family's strengths. You can also access description and photos of the children via California Kids Connection at
