Therapy Services

The Program

TLC Child & Family Services offers therapeutic services to adolescents and their families. Our goal is to offer adolescents and their families a multi-disciplinary treatment program that is either an alternative or an addition to the residentially-based program. This unique program creates an integrated set of services for high-risk adolescents and promotes greater success in the family, school and community. We coordinate services with the school, county mental health, community service providers and the family. TLC’s Outpatient Services staff includes clinical psychologists, social workers and marriage and family therapists. Medication support services are provided through a consultant psychiatrist.

Therapy Services

We offer individual and group sessions as well as family therapy for our adolescents and their families. Milieu therapy is offered for all students either enrolled at Journey High School or live in TLC’s residential treatment program. TLC’s Outpatient Services program provides daily therapeutic groups such as Adoptions & Family Relationships, Mindfulness, Identity Spectrum (LGBTQ), Animal Assisted Therapy
(, Music and Expressive Arts Therapy.  Outpatient Mental Health Services also provides groups that address social skills, coping strategies, vocational and independent living skills in order to meet every client’s specific treatment needs. All of our residential and Journey High School students are assigned a primary therapist who conducts the weekly individual therapy sessions and bi-monthly family therapy sessions. As students need less therapy or find structure in the community such as jobs or after school sports, they are released from the therapy groups. In it’s stead, students continue in individual and family therapy. In addition, aftercare services are available.

TLC has been serving foster youth in residential treatment since 1975. We provide comprehensive care for youth that includes a safe and structured home environment with highly trained staff members along with individual, family, and group therapies that support the growth and development for each youth.

Each youth is assessed for psychiatric need and our treatment team takes the time to consider all the complex interacting biopsychosocial factors which may contribute to the emotional or behavioral problems that an individual teenager may be experiencing. Evaluations at TLC are comprehensive, including an extended teen and family initial assessment, review of records, milieu observation, psychiatric evaluation and diagnostic assessment, and on-going team collaboration. If medication is indicated, specific target symptoms are identified and side effects discussed with the holder of medication rights and the teenager when appropriate. Consent is obtained from each teen as well as the holder of medication rights. This includes a thorough documentation and submission of all necessary legal forms required by California law. Medications are never prescribed as the only treatment, but if needed, as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Close monitoring for side effects, including lab tests as necessary are an important aspect of medication prescription and regular appointments (monthly or as needed ) are a part of the on-going oversight for youth prescribed psychotropic medications.

TLC does not use medications to treat normal adolescent "disruptive" behavior or emotional volatility, or when such issues are better dealt with in psychotherapy, the milieu or through diet, exercise, or other non-medication approaches.
