TRANSITIONAL HOUSING

If you are an adolescent in foster care and have no parents or guardians, how do you transition into independent living?

Many of us remember that stressful age and the challenge of making good choices. Without adult involvement, many foster care children end up homeless or in the correction system. TLC identified a growing need to assist teenagers towards successful independence and integration into their local communities.

In 2005, TLC began operating the Transitional Housing Placement Program (THPP) with the County of Sonoma Social Services Department. THPP gives young people, ages 16-19, the opportunity to learn critical life skills from professional staff. In 2007, the Transitional Housing Placement Plus (THP-Plus) program was initiated with the goals of continued support and assistance in independent life skills to young adults, ages 18-24.

Youth from our residentially-based group homes, Journey High School and foster youth from Sonoma County and surrounding communities can apply for transitional housing assistance.

For both programs to succeed, TLC partners with landlords and homeowners for safe apartments and homes for adolescents meeting the criteria for independent living.

Lisa Rohe, PsyD, is the Director of Transitional Housing Programs. For more information, please call (707) 528-3020 extension 202 or email THP@tlc4kids.org.
